Dental-Medical Project – By The Numbers

81 dental patients. 80 medical consultations. 56 free X-rays. 150 free toothbrushes and toothpaste. 6 dentists. 3 doctors. 21 Rotarians. 7 SK officers. 7 barangay officials and staff. 4 hours.
Judging from these numbers, the SK’s second annual dental-medical mission was a resounding success! Many thanks to the Rotary Club of Marikina North led by Pres. Raul Catapang and the barangay council headed by Kap. Belen Cruz foir being our partners in this noteworthy service project.
6th Katipunan ng Kabataan General Assembly

“KK6”, which was held for the very first time at the Hacienda Heights Village Multi-Purpose Hall on 27 June 2009, was attended by 56 barangay youth and guests, more or less. It was marked by the accomplishment report made by all the SK members, acoustic music numbers, an award given by the barangay peace and order council to SK Chair Iya, and raffle prizes being given to lucky attendees at the end of the short program.
Alternative Learning System (ALS) Project In Full Swing

Despite the drop in the number of enrollees (the original batch of 33 listed participants went down to only 17 last June 2009 largely due to the fire that hit the Katipunan community where almost half of the enrollees resided), this project has been going strong because of the perseverance of Teacher Ivy Gamatero (who is so dedicated she even works on Saturdays and conducts home visits) and the support of the barangay council and the DepEd.
The midpoint of the 10-month project was highlighted by the transfer of the ALS venue on 22 June 2009 from the Barangay Hall Roofdeck to the Day Care Center. The new venue, located at the old barangay hall (Russet corner Olive Streets), however has been prone to frequent flash floods during this rainy season, which from time to time resulted in the suspension or interruption of the daily classes. Still, the program continues, and equipped with a white board, 287 photocopied modules, and other supplies and materials, with the participants now busy preparing for their much-awaited ALS Accreditation and Equivalency Test on 24 October 2009.
Good luck to all the ALS enrollees!
Some SK Infra Projects

Last year, or sometime in June and October 2008, the SK adopted three separate resolutions appropriating the total amount of Php210,000.00 to (i) provide additional funding for the construction of a covered walk for the pupils of SSS Village Elementary School, and (ii) finance the installation of benches and railings in the covered court of Rancho Estate 2 subdivision for the use of its residents.
Well, they’re done now, and have helped the intended beneficiaries starting this year! Many thanks to our friends in the barangay council for all their help, especially Kap. Belen Cruz and Kagawad Ronnie Ortiz.

RISE-UP! College Entrance Test Review Program Update

For the last 6 Saturdays (starting on 18 April 2009 up to last Saturday, 30 May 2009), around 30 incoming high school students – 12 of whom are from Barangay Concepcion Dos – underwent grueling review and tutorial sessions at the Sta. Elena High School to prepare them for the forthcoming UP College Admission Tests (UPCAT). In coordination with the Kabataan Kontra Kahirapan, pre-tests, diagnostic exams, review classes, and mock exams were conducted for the participants.
Everyone was all hyped up for the trip to the UP Diliman campus last Saturday, the culminating activity of the project. The heavy rains, however, refused to cooperate with our best-laid plans. Because of the heavy downpour, the trip was rescheduled to 13 June 2009.
The SK ConDos Reports Part II

Once again, the City Government tapped our SK to make a power-point presentation of its accomplishments and ongoing activities to visiting SK delegations from the provinces.
First up were the SK Chairpersons and Kagawads of Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, all 150 or more of them, who trooped to the Kapitan Moy Center on 27 May 2009 to listen to a fun-filled report made by SK Chair Iya, accompanied by Kagawads Nikki, Nikolai, Chino & Ian. The following day, it was the turn of an 18-man SK delegation from Bohol at the Marikina City Hall; in the absence of SK Chair Iya who had another engagement, SK Kagawads Shane, Nikki, Nikolai, Chino & Ian ably stepped up to the plate and gave a very informative and interactive presentation.
Rocking The Vote!

On the evening of May 6, 2009, 12 of the leading rock bands of the country (with 3 impressive front acts) got together and put up a great show to support a church and to encourage the youth to register and vote. This major event was entitled "Let's Build A Church...Help Our Community...Build Our Country", and was presented by the Evangelist Choir & Soupstar Entertainment in cooperation with the St. Paul of the Cross Parish (and the Ministry of Youth Affairs), and co-presented by the SK and the barangay council of Brgy. Concepcion Dos in Marikina City, as well as Infoteq, Informatics, Jollibee, URC, and Chippy. MYX and Rock Ed were tapped as media partners.
It was an impressive production and the result of a truly collaborative effort of all the organizers. And it turned out to be a great, great show that lasted up to half past one in the morning, with Sandwich, 6CycleMind, Callalily, Imago, Pedicab, Ernville, Paraluman, Duster, Aurora, Manibela, Protein Shake, and Blue Ketchup performing one after the other!
Indeed, many lessons were learned and memorable experiences acquired - direct selling of tickets at various public places (the church grounds, Marikina Sports Center, SM Marikina City, and even SM Megamall), distribution of 3,000 flyers throughout the barangay, designing and installing 200 posters and tarp streamers, public speaking (church announcements), dealing with all sorts of people, adjusting when the unexpected happens, overcoming resistance, tension and stress, organizing people and conceptualizing marketing campaigns, working with exemplary leaders like Kuya Coco Madrasto and Ate Hazell Florentino, the attention to detail, monitoring efforts, the highs and lows of "work overload", delegating and multi-tasking, time management, the sense of accomplishment after a job well-done, the works!
Around 350 to 400 people came, but the size of the audience easily would have been double had it not rained. But no matter: we were able to raise a ton of money for a church in need (in Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal), and launched a visible campaign to get the youth in our community to be involved in next year's elections! Talk about hitting 2 birds with one stone!!
The SK ConDos Reports

SK Concepcion Dos had another round of presenting its powerpoint presentation of past accomplishments and upcoming projects (after being tapped by City Hall to make similar reports to visiting SK provincial delegations from Bohol, Iloilo, Sarangani, Cavite, etc. in late March and early April 2009) to the youth of Hacienda Heights Village on April 26, 2009 at subdivision’s Multi-Purpose Hall. We would like to thank the HHV homeowners’ association for giving us the opportunity to meet up and talk to the youth of their village. :)
Summer Youth Sportsfest 2009

This year’s edition of the Sportsfest drew the participation of 12 basketball and volleyball teams consisting of a total of approximately 110 players. A joint project of the SK and the St. Paul of the Cross Parish Ministry for Youth Affairs, the competition was held in 2 venues: Rancho 2 and La Milagrosa covered courts.
Held from April 18 to 20, 2009, the Sportsfest entailed round-robin elimination games during the first 2 days followed by semi-final and championship games on the third. Emerging as champion in the basketball tournament was the Phil.Mar team which beat the Rancho team, while the volleyball champion was the ‘Green-Minded’ team (over the Ace team).
RISE-UP! College Entrance Test Review Program Year 2

A joint project of the SK and the Kabataan Kontra Kahirapan (KKK), the RISE-UP! Project drew the participation of more than 40 incoming high school senior students, 12 of whom reside in Barangay Concepcion Dos. This free tutorials and review project has proven to be successful in the past, with more than 10 particIpants passing last year’s UPCAT!
Held at the Sta. Elena High School, the program started on April 18, 2009 and will be held for the next 5 consecutive Saturdays. An orientation and pre-test was held on the first Saturday, and the program will culminate with a mock-up exam and visit to the U.P. Diliman campus on May 30, 2009
Hiyas ng Marikina 2009

Congratulations to Ms. Crizza Cabugtos, the barangay’s bet for this annual beauty pageant, for placing third runner-up in the Hiyas ng Marikina competition! Crizza was in fact one of the favorites, and also won two Ms. Photogenic awards. The winner was the contestant from Barangay Parang.
It will be recalled that the SK, together with the barangay council and the Dulaang Bagong Sibol, held the annual Hiyas ng Concepcion Dos beauty pageant on November 29, 2008 at the SSS Village Elementary School grounds. Crizza, who was heads and shoulders above the other contestants, walked away with the crown
“Si Hesus…Noon, Ngayon at Magpakailanman”

The sixth annual edition of the Senakulo presented by the Dulaang Bagong Sibol under the leadership of Carlo Tangco was held on Holy Wednesday, April 8, at the SSS Village Elementary School. Financially supported by both the SK and the barangay council, as well as by various sponsors and donors, the presentation did not disappoint. On hand to give their respective messages were Cong. Del de Guzman, Kap. Belen Cruz, and, of course, SK Chair Iya Parungao.
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Workshop 2009

For the second straight year, the SK, in cooperation with the Center for Leadership and Change, Inc., implemented one of its centerpiece projects on March 26 & 27, 2009 at the Center for Excellence at the Marikina City Hall – the ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens’ workshop. This 2-day leadership training and personality development activity had 23 participants, 16 of whom completed the course and were given the corresponding certificates of attendance. It was an AWESOME experience
5th Katipunan ng Kabataan General Assembly

Despite the fact that KK5 was held on a date (March 20, 2009) that coincided with most high school graduations in the community, the SK managed to have a respectable attendance for its assembly. Although lower than last year’s average of 85 attendees, the 55 teenagers who were present were very active and animated during the meeting, which featured the usual reports, raffle prizes, entertainment numbers, and games. Perhaps it’s time to rethink the SK’s attendance promotion strategy?
Inter-Barangay Basketball Tourney Kicks Off

The opening ceremonies of the annual Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament was held on March 15, 2009 at the Marikina Sports Park. The competition this year will feature 3 divisions – midgets and juniors, as well as for the first time, ladies. Barangay Concepcion Dos will field 3 basketball teams in the hope that it can improve its showing last year, when its midgets team placed second over-all.
Let’s go all-out in supporting our young players
