Christmas Gift-Giving 2009

Learning their lessons last year regarding crowd control and physical arrangements, this Christmas season’s gift-giving project held in the morning of 20 December 2009 for 150 indigent children residing in Barangay Concepcion Dos was a no frills, simpler, smoother, and more organized affair. A registration table was set up at the entrance of the Barangay Hall with a pre-prepared list of beneficiaries to ensure there would be no freeloaders.

The gift packs this year were divided into 75 bags for boys and an equal number for girls. Each contained 1 kilo of rice, 2 cans of sardines, 2 packs of noodles, pencils and 3 notebooks, 1 pack of Knick Knack pretzels, 2 packs of Ro-Ro biscuits, among others. The girls received fans, while the boys received toy cars.

Salamat naman at kahit paano’y tuloy pa rin ang Pasko para sa mahihirap nating mga kabataan sa barangay!

8th Katipunan ng Kabataan General Assembly

What a way to cap the year!

After the 7th KK last September had to be cancelled at the very last minute on the very day Ondoy struck Marikina, the SK did everything possible and put up all the stops to make sure the eight assembly would be a memorable event. And as a reward for all their efforts, 86 KK members, youth leaders, barangay officials, and guests trooped to the Pan de Amerikana to attend KK8 and partake of the buffet dinner especially prepared for them.

The evening featured awards given to all those organizations and individuals who helped out the SK throughout the year (Rotary Club of Marikina North, the barangay council, St. Paul of the Cross Ministry of Youth Affairs, Evangelist Choir, Dulaang Bagong Sibol, Richard Nieves, etc.), acoustic music presentations, accomplishment reports rendered by the SK Kagawads, an inspirational talk done by former SK Federation President Nino Cruz, and, of course, lots and lots of raffle prizes!

Marikina Essay-Writing Contest: Bigger and Better!

We did not expect it. At most, we thought around 70 to 80 high school students would be there at the Multi-Purpose Building of Hacienda Heights Village last Sunday morning, 22 November 2009.

The response, however, was so overwhelming that 133 contestants from 10 Marikina high schools registered on-site for the club’s (and the SK’s) English and Pilipino city-wide essay-writing contest. So overwhelming was the response that we ran out of tables and chairs (and snacks), so much so that almost 60 of the contestants had to write their essays immediately outside the venue on the floor!

The contest proper thus was delayed by half an hour, and started at 10:35 A.M. Welcome remarks were delivered by Mrs. Ging Ramos for Rotary and SK Chair Iya Parungao, after which the rules, criteria, and topics for the contest were announced. For the English category (which drew 56 contestants from 10 schools), the topic was “Are Elections Really Important?”; on the other hand, the 77 participants in the Pilipino category wrote essays on the topic “Ang Pilipinas…Sa Sampung Taon”. The participants were given one hour to complete their essays, and were provided with papers, pens, and snacks.

The awarding ceremonies was held on December 8th, at the La Veranda. Emerging as winners were the following: English – first place: Janine Agnes Ordoveza of Concepcion Integrated School (‘A Lighted Decision’), second: Jhesset Thrina Enano of IJA, and third: Lara Gianina Reyes of Marikina Science H.S. For the Pilipino category, the top 3 winners were: Geraldine Martinez of Marikina High School (first place, ‘Kaalansibay ng Bagong Panahon’), Moris Mascarinas of Marikina H.S. (2nd), and Jairah Jane Torres of Sta. Elena H.S. (third). Substantial cash prizes were given to the winners of each category (Php6,000.00, Php4,000.00, and Php2,000.00 to the top 3 placers respectively), including those in the top 10 (Php500.00 each).

The judges for the contest were Attys. Bien Medel, Tony Parungao, and Nep Bulilan (for Pilipino), as well as Engr. Deo Salumbides, Dr. Toto Mina, and Mr. Ritchie Villareal (for Engish), all members of the Rotary Club of Marikina North.

It was a hugely successful project. At least that was to be expected.

SK Joins Barangay Council in Relief Efforts

Nobody expected it to happen; Ondoy wasn’t even a typhoon, for crying out loud. The SK was even making last-minute preparations for its (cancelled) Katipunan ng Kabataan General Assembly scheduled that same day. And yet, when it did, many of the residents in our barangay (including practically all of the barangay’s officials and personnel) were very badly affected by the rains and the floods, the likes of which we had not seen or experienced in a long, long while.

Despite this, it did not take long for the barangay council to spring into action. In close coordination with the city government, and with the cooperation of various groups and organizations, relief operations were immediately organized under the tireless leadership of Kap. Belen Cruz and the Kagawads. The distributions of relief goods were done on an almost daily-basis for the benefit of our neighbors in Katipunan and Panganiban, and the SK was there to support these efforts.

The SK helped in the packing and distribution of the various relief goods solicited and gathered, and also tied up with the Psychology Department students of the University of the Philippines (Diliman) for the donation of used clothes and other relief items on 30 September 2009, during which Pola Parungao, SK Chair Iya’s older sister, uttered the memorable phrase “Babangon ang Marikina!” 2 days after, or on 02 October 2009, the SK was able to source 1 huge box of ‘Sarsarap’ packs (manufactured by Nutri-Asia) for distribution to the Ondoy victims in the barangay.

It feels good to help!

New Voters’ Registration Campaign

With the installation of more than 60 specially-designed multi-colored tarpaulin streamers all over the barangay, and the distribution of leaflets to all the houses in the community, the SK has more than done its share in promoting greater awareness of the deadline for registration of new voters for the 2010 national and local elections, and the importance of doing so, although many of us were then still recovering from the Ondoy tragedy. While we do not have the statistics yet from the Comelec office, it may be safe to say that many folks were able to register, as can be seen from the very long lines at the public market going to the Comelec office during the last week of registration.

Now, if only the Comelec were just a bit more organized…. We hope this won’t be an indication of things to come on election day. Sigh.

BREAKING NEWS: THE SUPREME COURT RECENTLY ORDERED THE COMELEC TO EXTEND THE REGISTRATION FOR NEW VOTERS. THE EXTENSION WILL LAST FOR 5 DAYS ONLY AND WILL START ON DECEMBER 21, 2009. DON’T MISS THIS!

6th ALS Final Report

After the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Center was transferred to the Barangay Day Care Center last June 23rd, the 18 remaining students/’learners’ (from the original 33 enrollees at the start of the program) were able to complete the course. 17 of them were able to register for the ALS Accreditation and Equivalency (A & E) Tests held on 25 October 2009 – one of whom took the elementary level exam. Mock tests were held on 30 July 2009, while a dry-run prior to the actual test was done on 21 October 2009. The enthusiasm of the learners was on full display when they even printed ALS T-shirts on their own.

We are now anxiously waiting for the results. In the meantime, preparations are underway for the second year of the ALS project (for a new batch of enrollees) which will start on 25 January 2010.

The ALS is a joint project of the DepEd-Marikina, Rotary Club of Marikina North, the barangay council of Barangay Concepcion Dos, and, of course, the SK. Thanks a million to Teacher Ivy Gamatero!

Updates on More Infra Projects

At the start of the year 2009, the SK had appropriated funds for the renovation and repair of the Roof Deck of the barangay hall (which it always uses for its Katipunan Assemblies and other projects), the construction of its very own office (in what used to be the HQ of the barangay tanods), the repair of the perennially-flooded Barangay Day Care Center, and the construction of a badminton court at Hacienda Heights subdivision.

Now that the year is drawing to a close, we are pleased to report that the renovation and repainting work at the Roof Deck is near completion, while the work on the SK office (which can serve as a meeting place for the youth organizations in the barangay) is in full swing – tiles are presently being installed. Hopefully, these will be completed by the end of December 2009. Soon, the SK will have a place of its own, its very own ‘home’.

We are also looking forward to the start of the construction of the badminton court at Hacienda Heights next month.
