Pediculus Humanus Capitis (Head lice) Project (MG # 73474)

Head Lice treatment to 250 students of Sampalukan elementary school in Caloocan City in coordination of Caloocan City Health Department. Sponsored by Rotary Club of Nishimiyakoshien, District 2680, Japan through RC Sampaguita Grace Park.
Description:
“Pediculus humanus capitis (Head lice) Project” is an obligate parasite of man. They are wingless insects spending their entire life on human scalp and feeding on human blood. According to an article in Sun Star Manila dated December 20, 2009, an online source of community news, recent studies conducted by Department of Education (DepEd) and the University of the Philippines (UP) revealed that next to tooth decay and dental problems, the most common health problem of public school children is Pediculosis or head lice infestation, followed by respiratory infection and diseases, skin diseases, and anemia. A rapid survey conducted by the GFK NOP Consumer Research and published in the Philippine Star on August 26, 2009 showed that 59 percent of Filipinos are afflicted with infestation of the scalp by lice and nits. Children aged four to ten are heavily affected, majority of whom are girls. About 34 percent of elementary school children in public schools have this problems This problem affects the academic performance of the students to a high degree. Those affected are usually discriminated because they are viewed as unsanitary and their attention span is limited because of constant itching. Afflicted children are often shy and do not participate actively in school. Control of head lice is also very difficult especially for children because of their habit of indiscriminate close contact sharing of their things with other children and by simply playing with an untreated, infested child. A vicious cycle ensues which can rapidly become frustrating for the whole family.

Concentrated Language Encounter – Stage 2
To increase level of literacy among public school pupils in Caloocan City, Philippines, by implementing a 2-year Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) Stage 2 literacy project, involving more or less 92 Grade 3 teachers in selected 14 public elementary schools in Caloocan City and the implementation of the CLE reaching strategy for the benefit of 4,000 Grades 3 and 4 pupils.
CLE have proven to be effective in increasing the language skills of their pupils in the public elementary school system. The CLE had been tested in other zones of District 3800, and it has proven to be successful, completion of the project proved to be a good strategy of teaching, then it will serve as a motivating tool for the trainers to continue to the next level, and at the same time the sponsoring Rotary Club will make sure to continue this worthwhile project.
This project were funded by the Rotary Foundation, Rotary Clubs of Macau Central and Metropolitan Hongkong, RI District 3450 and RC Sampaguita Grace Park, District 3800, Philippines.
