Zone 8: Mandaluyong
September in the Rotary Calendar is the New Generations Month and one of the strong reasons for Zone 8 Global Presidents to achieve and make the New Generations Conference a great success is the Fifth Avenue of Service – the New Generations. It is during the Global Year 2010 – 2011 that the Fifth Avenue of Service was added. Simultaneously held on September 18, 2010, Zones 5, 6, 7 and 8 organized the conference for youth ages 13 to 30. In an effort to know the problems affecting the Mandaluyong youth, the conference was dubbed “Capacity Building for the Global Youth Leaders”.
SAG Al Vizcocho gave the inspirational message describing briefly how the New Generations Conference for Zone 8 was organized. He also explained how the Council on Legislation approved the Fifth Avenue of Service, the New Generations in April 2010.
Global President Vibien De Guzman and Rtn. Vina Villegas presented the workshop flow with the Leadership card as the first break up session. Over 230 students and young professionals from the City of Mandaluyong joined the conference, a remarkable number of participants. The conference was not the typical lecture of speakers. It was more on team grouping and each group was given a puzzle of known leaders all over the world and the first team to complete the puzzle wins the team prize. The second workshop “The Portrait of a Leader” – a self awareness and disclosure for the youth. The New Generations Conference for Zone 8 is unique such that youth shared their thoughts on what are the characteristics of a leader. New Generations acknowledges the changes implemented by the youth as their involvement in leadership development activities deepen. Highlight of the conference is the presentation of each group on their concept of the Next Generation Leaders. Three posters were chosen as winners depicting who are the next generation and the requirements of the leaders of the next generations. Rotarians served as judges and facilitators, it was also a learning experience for Rotarians of Zone 8.
The conference proper culminated with the Personal (Leadership) Development Plan of each participants. Facilitators recommended Leadership Excellence from each group and were given a token of appreciation. And finally the session was wrapped up with the Evaluation Form filled up by each participants. Variables included in the evaluation are program proper, facilitators and the key learning from the sessions they participated. Certificates were given to each participants after the conference. Zone 8 Global Presidents headed by RC Mandaluyong Uptown Thess Santos as the Lead Club were tired after the conference but with a feeling of fulfillment and success of the New Generations. It was another great adventure for Rotary with the addition of the Fifth Avenue of Service – New Generations.
