This is the design of our 'Go Out & Vote' tarps which will be installed in strategic places all over our barangay by next week. Let us all make a difference, let us all be the change we want to see.

'RISE-UP! UPCAT Review Program Year 3

The RISE-UP! UPCAT Review Program (Year 3), a joint project with Kabataan Kontra Kahirapan, started on Saturday, April 10, 2009, at 8:00 a.m., with 21 incoming high school seniors residing in the barangay participating. They were joined by an unexpectedly-large number of walk-in participants (around 30 at least) who trooped to the Sta. Elena High School grounds. We trust our project partners, KKK, will be able to sort out this situation.

Unlike the review classes of the previous 2 years which were held every Saturday, the 2010 edition is a one-week daily project. The schedule is as follows: orientation & pre-test on April 10, daily review classes from April 12 to 17, and mock exam & campus tour on April 19.

94 Attend KK9!

Many many thanks the 94 guys who, despite the intense summer heat, attended the Katipunan ng Kabataan General Assembly held in the sweltering afternoon of March 6, 2010 at the Barangay Hall Roof Deck. And thank you, Kuya Coco Madrasto, for being our "impromptu" guest speaker haha! :)

Inter-Barangay Basketball Tourney

Our barangay fielded 2 basketball teams (juniors and midgets) at this year’s Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament that opened on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, at the Tambay Kay Lim basketball court at Sta. Elena. The traditional parade around the streets of the City Hall under the heat of the early afternoon Sunday sun preceded the actual opening of the tournament.

The players of the teams were selected after tryouts were conducted last January 2010. Kap. Belen Cruz and the barangay kagawads were there during the opening in full force, along with SK officials. Hopefully, many of you will cheer our teams to victory in this tournament!

ALS Year 2 News

The second year of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) literacy project of the barangay and the SK for out-of-school youth quietly began in January 2010 with the recruitment of new enrollees for the program, Teacher Ivy of the DepEd has so far has successfully invited 10 learners – 4 from Katipunan, 2 from Panganiban, 1 from Dawn, 1 from Mayon, etc. On 25 February 2010, an official from the DepEd-Marikina went to the ALS Center to monitor the project.

As soon as the funds for the project are released (hopefully, within the month), the ALS Center will operate full-blast and will have its formal launching. Year 2 of the ALS in our barangay is a joint project of the barangay council, SK, and the Rotary Club of Marikina North.

In the meantime, we are very, very happy to note that 13 of its 16 Alternative Learning System (ALS) out-of-school "learners" PASSED the secondary-level Accreditation & Equivalency (A & E) tests conducted by the DepEd last October! It's good news like this that makes all our efforts fulfilling and worthwhile. Congratulations to our ALS friends!! Those who passed and who can now enroll in college: Ashley Anclote, Isabel Bartolay, Ryan Cabansag, Catherine Chavenia, Grace Competente, Eiffel Jarvis Diaz, Kehd Emmanuel Diaz, Viron Harold Revatores, Vincent Miguel Ribano, Emilee Rodrigo, Reginald Santos & Addrian Anthony Santos. Once again, congrats sa inyong lahat!

SK Online

In April 2008, we created our very own website (http://www.skc2.org) in order to promote the SK in our community and encourage interaction and communication with our constituents. The website was accompanied by the creation of a Multiply account, which served as the website’s main gallery of pictures, blogs, links, and other related items, We are very proud to recall that this effort was cited with a special award during the Marikina Web Awards held in June 2008, as we were (and still are) the only SK in Marikina with its own website.

We have enhanced our online presence since then, after we created Plurk and Twitter accounts in April 2009, and a Facebook Page in February 2010 (as of 01 March 2010, our FB page already had 161 “fans”!)

Incidentally, when one types "Sangguniang Kabataan" on either the Google or Yahoo! search engines, our SK can be found on the first page! Thank you guys for all your support!!

More Infra Updates

Renovation and repainting of Barangay Hall Roof Deck – check. Construction of SK Office – to be checked this month (the only remaining work to be done is the installation of the air conditioning unit). Construction of badminton court in Hacienda Heights – check.

It is hoped that the SK Office can be formally inaugurated soonest, so that other youth organizations in the barangay can also use it for their meetings, and the HHV badminton court will be ready for use by all barangay residents by the start of the summer season.

UP JPIA’s ‘Youth Got Power’

On 14 February 2010, upon the invitation of U.P. JPIA, a student organization based in U.P. Diliman, SK Chair Iya was given the honor of conducting a workshop on leadership to 50 public high school students in Q.C. Iya took the opportunity to make an updated version of the presentation the SK had previously made for visiting SK provincial delegations and neighborhood associations in Marikina.

Community Immersion with ADMU Students (INTACT Program)

For 3 consecutive Saturday mornings last January 2010 (January 16, 23 & 30), the SK hosted 3 batches of Ateneo college freshmen students (T3, R2 & Q1) as they interacted with 60 indigent kids residing in the various depressed communities in the barangay. ADMU's Office of Social Concern and Involvement (OSCI) had previously approached the SK for assistance for its INTACT social formation program. The objective was to instill the ideal of 'social responsibility' among these college students so that they will hopefully become "persons for others".

It was certainly a learning experience for all concerned - not just the indigent kids and the Ateneo college students, but also for us in the SK as well...
